DEVATOP Equips Child Domestic Workers with Essential Life Skills in Okoko Community

On Friday, 8 May, Devatop Centre for Africa Development continued its ongoing Mentorship Clinic for child domestic workers (CDWs) in Okoko Community, Lagos, with a session focused on life skills development and personal growth. The mentorship clinic brought together 25 child domestic workers for an engaging and interactive learning experience facilitated by Ms. Toyin Vincent. The session was designed to strengthen participants’ communication skills, self-expression, confidence, and overall personal development.

Throughout the session, the children explored the importance of effective communication and learned practical ways to express themselves with greater confidence in their daily lives. They also discussed the difference between hearing and listening, gaining a better understanding of how active listening contributes to meaningful communication and stronger relationships.

The facilitator further guided participants through conversations on emotional awareness, highlighting how emotions and moods can influence communication and reduce its effectiveness when not properly managed. The children were encouraged to recognize and manage their emotions while interacting respectfully and positively with others. The mentorship clinic provided participants with valuable opportunities to strengthen their listening skills, improve their emotional intelligence, and develop healthier communication habits that can benefit them both at home and within their communities.

The session concluded with participants demonstrating greater confidence in expressing themselves and a deeper appreciation for the role of effective communication in building positive relationships. Through its ongoing mentorship clinics, Devatop Centre for Africa Development continues to equip child domestic workers with essential life skills that contribute to their personal growth, well-being, and future success.

The mentorship clinic forms part of Devatop’s ongoing efforts to strengthen care and protection systems for child domestic workers in Lagos State under the programme to address exploitative child domestic work, supported by the Freedom Fund with funding from the U.S. Department of State.
