Why You Need to Understand AI Before It Starts Making Decisions About You

Why You Need to Understand AI Before It Starts Making Decisions About You

Think about your day. You unlocked your phone with your face. You chatted with a “customer care agent” that turned out to be a bot. Somewhere in there, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was quietly working, deciding things about you. Most of us never asked for this. It just happened. And that’s the problem.

Don’t get it wrong, AI is an incredible piece of technology built to make our everyday lives faster, easier, and smoother, but the frustration many of us feel comes down to how people choose to use it. There’s genuine magic in being able to unlock your phone with a glance or get a quick answer from a search engine late at night. The issue starts when individuals and companies quietly push these systems on us without asking, using them to cut corners, dodge real human support, or track our habits for profit. At the end of the day, AI is just a powerful tool—it’s up to the people designing and running it to treat users with fairness and respect

AI is now part of everyday life in Africa, how we chat, work, shop, apply for jobs, and even how we’re policed or approved for services. It’s bringing real convenience. But here’s the catch, AI is growing faster than our ability to understand it, question it, or protect ourselves from it. Most people have no idea what’s being collected about them, why a decision was made, or what to do when something goes wrong.

You’ve probably seen a video online that looked completely real but turned out to be fake, a “deepfake.” Maybe you’ve heard of someone being blackmailed with a fake nude image that was never actually them. Or a scam call that used AI to sound exactly like a family member in trouble. These aren’t rare, they do not happen far away from us  anymore. They’re happening right now, and they’re happening to ordinary people especially women, children, and young people.

At the same time, many people simply don’t know what happens to their personal information once it’s typed into an app or scanned by a camera. Who’s storing it? Who’s selling it? Who’s using it against you?

Most of us can’t fight what we don’t understand. That’s exactly the gap AI4Rights Africa was created to close.

What AI4Rights Africa Is Doing About It

AI4Rights Africa is a new initiative by Devatop Centre for Africa Development with one simple mission which is to help ordinary people understand AI, raise awareness on the importance of  Data Protection, the need for citizens to protect their personal information, and know what to do when AI is used against them.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Learning what’s actually happening. Simple training on how AI works, how your data is collected and used, and how to spot fake or manipulated content like deepfakes.
  • Knowing your rights. You have a right to ask questions when a decision affects you. AI4Rights teaches people that this right exists and how to use it.
  • A place to report abuse. Through the TALKAM Human Rights App, anyone who experiences AI-related harm, a deepfake, a scam, harassment, exploitation, will have somewhere to report it and get connected to real help.
  • Training for young people and targeted communities: Young individuals are the highest consumers of AI generated content.  so the knowledge doesn’t stay in one place but spreads from person to person, community to community.

Protecting yourself from AI-related harm doesn’t require a computer science degree. It just requires knowing a few simple things such as that some of the  videos we see online or can be faked, that your personal data has value and should be guarded carefully, and that you’re allowed to ask questions when something automated affects your life.

AI isn’t going away. But how prepared we are to deal with it  that’s still very much in our hands.
