Court sentences woman, 29, for human trafficking

Ebere Nnamani, 29, was arrested on October 19 following a tipoff that she physically abused the girl living in her home, said National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.

A statement issued by the agency’s head of press of public relations, Nneka Aniagoh, said Nnamani was arraigned on December 5 and pleaded guilty to both charges against her.

In the Suit, FRN Vs Ebere Jessica Nnamani, filed at the Federal High Court, Enugu with suit number FHC/EN/CR/80/2017,  she was charged on a 2-count charge of harbouring a person under 12 years old as domestic help and requiring a person to do work that is injurious to her physical, social and psychological development.

Presiding judge, Justice Oghoghore, pronounced her guilty and sentenced her for up to six months jail time with a fine option of N50,000 on the first count, and 12 months in prison with a fine option for N100,000.

Both sentences are to run concurrently and Nnamani will be in custody pending payment of the fine.

NAPTIP director-general Julie Okah-Donli commended the efforts of the officers for their prosecutorial prowess and reiterated the agency’s resolve to combat exploitative child labour and warned detractors to desist from such or face the full wrath of the law.
