Devatop school sensitization on Child Protection and Prevention of Exploitation of Child Domestic Workers (CDWs) at Local Authority Primary School

On Friday, 25th September, Devatop Centre for Africa Development conducted a school sensitization on Child Protection and Prevention of Exploitation of Child Domestic Workers (CDWs) at Local Authority Primary School 1 and 2, reaching 80 students.

The team was warmly received by the school authorities. The session was attended by the Head Teachers of both schools.

Before the commencement of the session, the Head Teachers addressed the pupils, welcoming the team and encouraging the children to listen attentively and participate fully.

During the session, the children were taught on child rights, how to recognize abuse through different types of abuse – physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect. They were also introduced to the topic of Child Domestic Work, who a Child Domestic Worker is, and the lived experiences and challenges of CDWs.

Furthermore, the children were sensitized on how to show support and kindness to child domestic workers and what to do when abuse takes place. They were also educated on the dangers of drug abuse and the advantages of staying away from drugs.

The children were very active and engaged throughout the session. They showed good understanding of the topics taught and actively participated by asking questions and sharing examples. They also participated in a Child Rights Game where they demonstrated their knowledge through a healthy competition between the two schools.

A key learning from the session was that children will speak up when they know who to report to and when they can trust the person they are reporting to.

To reinforce this, the school counselors reaffirmed everything that was taught, reassuring the children that they should report any case of abuse. The counselors were very active and demonstrated strong commitment to carrying out their duties in ensuring the safety and protection of the children.
