DEVATOP Centre for Africa Development is excited to announce the launch of the Tech4HumanRights Community Service Corps—a volunteer-driven, flexible, and part-time program that connects ICT professionals and early-career technologists with meaningful opportunities to strengthen human rights advocacy and civic technology in Africa.
DEVATOP is a human rights organization committed to promoting and protecting human rights, with a particular focus on combating human trafficking, gender-based violence, child abuse, and exploitation, using innovative civic technology solutions.
Through the Tech4HumanRights Community Service Corps, DEVATOP will mobilize passionate ICT professionals and early-career technologists to volunteer their skills, providing training and technical support to local human rights organizations and advocates. In return, participants will gain hands-on project experience, portfolio-building opportunities, professional exposure, and recognition for their contributions to social good.

TYPES OF ICT PROFESSIONALS NEEDED:
- Web Developers & UI/UX Designers– To build or improve websites, platforms, and user-friendly digital tools for advocacy and case reporting.
- Software Developers & App Developers– To support the development, maintenance, and enhancement of human rights-related apps (e.g., TALKAM App).
- Data Analysts & Data Scientists– To help analyze human rights data, trends, and reports for advocacy, visualization, and decision-making.
- Cybersecurity Experts– To support human rights actors to protect sensitive human rights data and train organizations on digital safety, data encryption, and privacy.
- IT Support Specialists– To provide troubleshooting, tech maintenance, and capacity building for partner organizations.
- Cloud Computing and Systems Admins– To support cloud-based case management systems and ensure data is securely stored and accessible.
- Digital Content Creators (Graphics, Video Editors, Animators)– To create compelling advocacy materials, infographics, and social media visuals for awareness campaigns.
- ICT Trainers & Digital Literacy Facilitators– To build the digital capacity of local advocates and organizations (e.g., using email, collaboration tools, cybersecurity hygiene).
- GIS Specialists / Tech Mappers– To assist in mapping violations or vulnerable areas using geospatial tools.
SERVICES TO BE PROVIDED BY THE CORPS:
- ICT training workshops and mentorship for human rights groups (organizations and activities). The training will focus on the followings:
- Digital Tools for Human Rights Advocacy– Training on how to use websites, blogs, and social media platforms to amplify advocacy, engage audiences, and mobilize support.
- Data Protection and Digital Security– Equipping participants with skills to safeguard sensitive information, protect victims’ identities, and ensure secure communication.
- Basic Tech Skills and Digital Literacy– For grassroots organizations, focus on foundational skills like email management, using cloud storage, organizing digital files, and using productivity tools like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
- Graphics and Digital Content Creation– Teaching participants how to create impactful visual content (e.g., flyers, infographics, short videos) for awareness and public engagement.
- Collaborative Tools and Remote Work– Training on using different technologies to improve teamwork.
- Responsible Use of Technology and AI– Understanding ethical issues in tech use for advocacy and exploring how to leverage responsible tech (including AI) in human rights work.
