Advancing Responsible Media Engagement in the Fight Against Exploitative Child Domestic Work

DEVATOP participated in a consultative forum focused on enhancing media engagement in the fight against exploitative child domestic work. The organization was represented by its Project Lead, Janet Homo, alongside Communications Assistant, Esther Nwosu.

The forum, themed “Amplifying Voices: Using Media to Drive Change Against Exploitative Child Domestic Work,” was convened by the Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre in collaboration with the Street Project Foundation. It brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including child protection advocates, media professionals, and civil society actors, to explore the critical role of the media in shaping public understanding and response to child domestic work issues.

Deliberations during the session emphasized the need for ethical, sensitive, and survivor-centered reporting. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions on how media platforms—ranging from radio and television to social media and print—can be effectively leveraged to raise awareness, influence policy, and drive social change.

A key outcome of the forum was the development of a comprehensive guideline document aimed at promoting responsible media coverage of child domestic work cases. The guideline underscores the importance of protecting the dignity and privacy of affected children, while ensuring that their stories are told in ways that inspire action without causing harm. DEVATOP’s participation in the forum reinforces its commitment to strengthening advocacy efforts and collaborating with key stakeholders to amplify voices, promote accountability, and advance the protection of vulnerable children.
