DEVATOP Sensitizes Students on Child Rights at Jollat Model College, Okoko

As part of ongoing efforts to promote child protection and safeguard the rights of vulnerable children, the Devatop Centre for Africa Development conducted a school sensitization program at Jollat Model College, Okoko community of Lagos State, Nigeria, on February 12, 2026.

The session engaged a total of 103 students, comprising 26 males and 77 females, and focused on equipping them with knowledge and practical tools to understand and protect their rights.

During the sensitization, students were educated on fundamental child rights and exposed to the various forms of abuse, enabling them to better recognize unsafe and exploitative situations. Special emphasis was placed on the plight and vulnerability of child domestic workers (CDWs), helping students understand how to identify and support children who may be at risk.

The session also addressed critical issues affecting young people, including the dangers of bullying, drug abuse, and sexual abuse. Facilitators provided clear and relatable guidance on how these challenges manifest and the importance of speaking up and seeking help.

In addition, students were introduced to the TALKAM Human Rights App as a safe and accessible digital tool for reporting cases of abuse. They were guided on how to use the platform effectively, alongside other reporting channels such as reaching out to trusted adults within their school or community and utilizing toll-free helplines.

The sensitization significantly enhanced students’ awareness of their rights, deepened their understanding of the risks faced by vulnerable children, and strengthened their confidence in using available reporting mechanisms. This initiative marks another important step in fostering a safer and more informed school environment, where students are empowered to take action against abuse and contribute to early prevention efforts within their communities.
