TALKAM Human Rights Awareness Workshop by DEVATOP, A Seed Of Change, Mcginnity Family Foundation and The Pollination Project.
As part of the activity of TALKAM Human Rights Project supported by A Seed Of Change, McGinnity Family Foundation and The Pollination Project; Devatop Centre for Africa Development and U. S Embassy Abuja organized a workshop for 100 civil society organizations, youth, and women on human trafficking and gender-based violence.
The aim of the workshop was to highlight the current trends of human trafficking and stimulate action among participants.
While addressing the participants, Mr. Joseph Osuigwe, the Executive Director of DEVATOP, explained that human trafficking is expanding in Nigeria like a virus, and more people are falling victims to traffickers. He said, “Devatop Centre for Africa Development recognizes that young people are majorly the victims of human trafficking, and that’s why the organization has been committed to engaging youth in curbing the scourge of trafficking. We initiated TALKAM Human Rights Project to integrate the use of ICT tools in tackling human trafficking, and people are currently using the mobile application to report. TALKAM Human Rights Project is supported by A Seed of Change, Mcginnity Family Foundation and The Pollination Project. We appreciate U.S Embassy Abuja for supporting to host this workshop in the embassy”.
Mr. Chidi Donatus, an assistant director at National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), commended DEVATOP for initiating TALKAM, and reiterated that his agency is already working closely with them to rescue reported victims of human trafficking.
Another resource person, Dorothy Njemanze also spoke about the use of visual media (videos) to educate citizens about human trafficking and gender-based violence. She narrated how her foundation has helped to increase awareness on this issue through creative media content.
TALKAM Human Rights Project focuses on using technology tool to monitor, and report, analyze human rights; and advocates and stimulates actions among community members, policy makers, government to tackle and prevent human rights abuse and more importantly to change the status quo in Nigeria.
The goal of TALKAM is to use information and data to stimulate actions against human rights abuse, and as well as increasing reportage, and reducing incidences.
