TALKAM Human Rights Project

TALKAM Human Rights Project is an initiative created to address human trafficking, gender-based violence and other related human rights abuses. It focuses on utilizing information and communication technology and local method to increase reportage of human trafficking and other human rights abuses in communities and strengthen the response system. It is an online human rights hub that offers a variety of information data and on human trafficking and human rights advocacy for community members, organizations, development experts, human rights activist, law enforcement agencies etc. reports of human rights violation are reported on the app.

The TALKAM(www.talkam.org) is an initiative of DEVATOP that focuses on utilizing information and technological communication and local method to increase reportage of human trafficking and other human rights abuses in communities and strengthen the response system. TALKAM (a pidgin English word meaning to Speak Up) is made up of the following: TALKAM Reporting App, TALKAM Human Rights Weekly Radio Program, TALKAM Human Rights Case Management, TALKAM Human Rights Hotline and Whatsapp, TALKAM Community Sensitization, and TALKAM Human Rights Training.

With TALKAM App, it is quite easy for people to report cases across every state in Nigeria. We receive and manage human rights cases and as well provide counseling to victims. Our TALKAM App and TALKAM Radio Program are becoming a household name as people are using the word “TALKAM” whenever they want to encourage others to report cases of abuse.

Since 2020, TALKAM has recorded over 70 human rights cases, responded to over 30 cases. Also, more than 200 human rights advocates in 30 states have been trained under TALKAM Project, and over 56 communities reached. Every week, more than 1, 500 000 are sensitized on human rights through TALKAM Weekly radio program (Cool FM, Wazobia FM, and KU FM)

Within the last two years, TALKAM has been supported by U.S Embassy Nigeria, International Centre for Investigative Reporting, Seed for Change, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, and National Human Rights Commission.

With TALKAM App (which is available only on Google PlayStore), it is quite easy for citizens to report cases across every state in Nigeria. We have received and manage human rights cases and as well provided counseling to victims. TALKAM is becoming a household name as people are using the word “TALKAM” whenever they want to encourage others to report cases of human rights abuses.

Through support from U.S Embassy Nigeria, we implemented the 3rd phase of TALKAM Project. The project initially planned to train 20 people from FCT. During the implementation, we selected and trained 65 human rights advocates from 30 states in Nigeria. The participants were enrolled for three months human rights advocacy courses on human trafficking, gender-based violence, violence against boys/men, rape, and child abuse. Out of the 65 participants, 35 advocates from 15 states were able to carry out step-down community awareness in 30 communities and online, educating over 2400 community members. Some of the trained advocates have been monitoring and reporting human right abuses using TALKAM App.

To improve and expand TALKAM Human Rights Project, here are few things we want to do:

  1. Upgrade TALKAM Reporting App and include Human Rights Online Courses
  2. Expand TALKAM Human Radio Program to 30 locations in Nigeria and two African countries (Ghana and Mali)
  3. To organize massive sensitization campaign in hard-to-reach groups in different states.
