DEVATOP Empowers Students at Ogbe College with Child Protection Knowledge

On 22 May, DEVATOP Centre for Africa Development organised a child protection sensitisation programme at Ogbe College in Isashi Community, Lagos, reaching 79 students comprising 39 boys and 40 girls. The initiative aimed to increase students’ understanding of child rights, child domestic work, bullying, drug abuse, and available reporting mechanisms while promoting positive life choices and career development.

A major focus of the sensitisation was raising awareness about the realities faced by child domestic workers (CDWs). Through interactive discussions and practical examples, students gained a deeper understanding of the challenges many child domestic workers experience, including excessive labour, neglect, physical and emotional abuse, denial of education, and exploitation. Participants were encouraged to show empathy towards vulnerable children, reject discrimination, and become advocates for child protection by speaking up, supporting their peers, and reporting cases of abuse or exploitation.

The programme also addressed the dangers of drug abuse and bullying, highlighting their negative effects on students’ health, academic performance, relationships, and future opportunities. Students were encouraged to resist peer pressure, treat one another with kindness and respect, and contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

To strengthen students’ understanding of child protection systems, participants were introduced to available reporting mechanisms, including trusted adults, school authorities, the Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre toll-free line (0800 800 8001), and the Talkam App. The session emphasised that reporting abuse is a vital step in protecting children and ensuring they receive the support and assistance they need.

The sensitisation concluded with DEVATOP’s interactive Child Rights Game, which actively engaged students in identifying different forms of child abuse, exploitation, and maltreatment. The activity reinforced key child protection messages in an engaging and participatory manner, inspiring students to become informed champions for children’s rights within their schools and communities.

The sensitisation was implemented by DEVATOP Centre for Africa Development under the Protect Child Domestic Workers from Maltreatment in Lagos State, supported by the Freedom Fund & funded by US Department of State.
