Community Dialogue on Child Domestic Work in Okoko Community, Lagos State

As part of ongoing efforts to prevent child domestic work and promote child protection, DEVATOP Centre for Africa Development, in collaboration with project partners, convened a community dialogue on 19 May in Okoko Community, Lagos State. The event brought together community members, faith leaders, women leaders, youth representatives, and other key stakeholders to strengthen community action against the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of children.

The dialogue served as an interactive platform for participants to examine the realities faced by child domestic workers and discuss practical solutions to address the factors that increase children’s vulnerability. Through open conversations and community engagement, participants explored ways to foster a safer environment where every child can thrive free from violence and exploitation. One of the key messages that emerged from the discussions was the importance of responsible parenting. Participants encouraged families to have only the number of children they can adequately provide for, noting that financial and social pressures often contribute to circumstances that place children at risk of exploitation.

Participants also reflected on the drama presentation featured during the dialogue, observing that the scenarios portrayed closely mirrored situations experienced within their own community. They acknowledged that some children living with relatives or employers continue to face physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, highlighting the urgent need for greater community vigilance and intervention. Several community members shared personal experiences and emphasized the importance of regularly checking on children who live away from their parents or guardians. They stressed that safeguarding children should not be left solely to families or authorities but is a collective responsibility that requires active involvement from every member of the community.

The dialogue further encouraged participants to speak out against abuse and utilize available reporting mechanisms, including the Talkam App, to report suspected cases of child abuse and exploitation. Many participants pledged to continue raising awareness within their homes, places of worship, community associations, and neighbourhoods, reinforcing their commitment to protecting children and promoting a culture where every child is safe, valued, and respected.
